Non-Profit Spotlight

Each year, BHS supports four Colorado-based non-profit organizations to truly be a beacon in the community at large through a one-time donation of $500 each. On January 24, 2008, BHS attendees voted for the four Colorado-based, non-profit organizations below.

We are delighted to recognize and honor one organization each quarter of 2008. We would like to thank each of you who participated in the selection process.

Congratulations!

First Quarter, 2007

Tennyson Center for Children

Mission: Tennyson Center for Children is a community of people dedicated to breaking the cycle of child abuse and neglect, serving and strengthening children and families. As professionals and concerned citizens, we strive to provide competent and caring treatment, educational and advocacy services that are community-based, family-focused and child-centered.

Reason: Until I came into contact with the Tennyson Center, I didn't know that Colorado ranks 3rd in the nation for deaths resulting from child abuse. The Center seeks to give kids a safe place to learn and grow while finding a long-term place for them to live. Federal funding for these types of programs has been cut dramatically. We all know the victims of abuse tend to be abusers themselves unless the cycle can be broken by a place like this.

Second Quarter, 2007

Lifespark Cancer Resources

Mission: Lifespark promotes and provides the integration of energy therapies within medical and community-based service programs for cancer clients through education, training, advocacy, and delivery of hands-on energy sessions.

Reason: Lifespark provides comfort and support to individuals with cancer through Reiki and Healing Touch therapy. Sessions are held at medical centers and churches throughout the metro-Denver area. Energy therapies sooth the body and mind while providing the opportunity for a paradigm shift for all involved.

Third Quarter, 2007

Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation

Mission: The mission of the Colorado "I Have a Dream"® Foundation (CIHAD) is to encourage the 100 percent high school graduation of a specific group of potentially at-risk students by providing them with academic assistance, life skills development, positive role models, and other forms of support throughout grades 3-12, culminating in an academic or vocational scholarship upon successfully completing all high school requirements.

Reason: The mission (and results) of CIHAD is to give at-risk youth the support, encouragement, and resources to break the cycle of poverty and ignorance. Their success rate is phenomenal. Although they are part of a national organization, they do their own local fund-raising, their efforts directly benefit the youth in this area, and they are active in the Denver community.

Fourth Quarter, 2007

Angels with Paws Cat Shelter

Mission: Angels with Paws is dedicated to finding loving families for homeless animals. We provide humane, quality care and cage-free shelter for all animals we receive.

Reason: Angels with Paws provides much needed care for unwanted and homeless cats and provides shelter and new adoptive homes for the unwanted animals.

We would like to thank everyone who submitted nonprofit organizations for consideration. The following are the other submissions for 2007. Although they were not selected by BHS this year, you may wish to read the information below and make personal donations to these worthwhile causes.

Guardianship Alliance of Colorado

Mission: The Guardianship Alliance of Colorado believes that all persons are entitled to lives of respect and dignity with freedom to exercise their rights and make their own decisions to the fullest extent of their abilities. The mission of The Alliance is to assure that these rights are protected and that appropriate decision-making support is available to adults In Colorado with seriously impaired decision-making capacity.

Reason: The Guardianship Alliance is the only resource in Colorado for those that need information regarding guardianship and other end-of-life issues. There is no financial help from any government agency. All money gathered is from memberships and some small grants. This is truly a wonderful organization worthy of consideration.

Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver

Mission: Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people from all walks of life to build simple, decent houses in which people can live and grow into all that God intended.

Reason: Habitat for Humanity believes that decent and affordable housing empowers people to reach their full potential. By freeing families from the unending struggles that accompany inadequate shelter, our houses open doors to increased self esteem and self reliance. Habitat is a permanent and lasting solution to a family's housing crisis.

Helping Hands Faith in Action

Mission: To assist the community through a coalition of volunteers and agencies. Services include: direct in-home volunteer services; caregiver support; relationship-based tangible assistance; and heartfelt individual attention. They serve seniors, the chronically ill, and the temporarily disabled.

Reason: HHFIA is a small non-profit organization with only 2 employees. All visits/services are supported by volunteers who give over 5000 hours per year. They are helping your and my neighbors, people who "just need a hand" to make a difference in their life. They could really use some additional funds.

One Sky One World

Mission: To promote annual concurrent events in hundreds of locations around the world on the second Sunday of every October leading to understanding and friendship between people at home and around world and an appreciation of all life on earth.

In 2007, they are expanding their vision by working on bringing international kite artists to work with children in the public schools.
